The cloister of the Laurentian Library, housed in the Basilica di San Lorenzo. It's a world-famous repository of more than 11,000 manuscripts and 4,500 early printed books, and is laso the home of the private library of the Medici family, making many of them priceless. The library was under the patronage of the Medici pope, Clement VII and many other notables. The library is renowned for the architecture planned and built by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It was commissioned in 1523, and construction began in 1525; when Michelangelo left Florence in 1534 it was incomplete, but then finished by Tribolo, Basari and Ammannati and opened in 1571. That same year, Cosimo I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, opened it to scholars and more additions were granted by the most famous librarian in its histroy, Angelo Maria Bandini, appointed in 1757 and responsible for the printed catalogs. Among its treasures are the Nahuatl Florentine Codex, the Squarcialupi Codex
